Freshman year, I joined my AGS class in travelling by bus to Arkansas. I also went to Heifer with my 8th grade class, but it was a better experience with AGS, because I got to know the students I would be in class with for the next four years.
Once we arrived, we participated in a poverty simulation at Heifer International. During the simulation, we were randomly divided into groups. Each group had a different amount of resources given to them, and each represented a different country or population. I was selected to be in the "Guatemala" group, meaning my group had a larger amount of resources. Groups such as "Appalachia" and "Slums" had very little resources, representing the poverty in these areas in the real world.
This was a very interesting experience for me, and I felt that I learned a lot. In the beginning, everyone believed it wouldn't be difficult. But as time progressed, we learned that we had little cooking skills, and that the cold was difficult to deal with. This experience taught me a lot about group dynamics and how to work with people that you aren't close with in hard situations.

After we finished the simulation, we had a few more parts of our trip. We visited Little Rock, Arkansas, and the first high school that was integrated during the Civil Rights movement. This was a really interesting experience, as I'd heard of this school many times, but it was a really cool experience to be able to see it. I felt that we learned a lot on this trip, both about poverty and the world, but also about each other. This was a really good start to my travel experiences throughout my time in AGS.
