I took this trip with my sophmore AGS class. I think that we knew more about this trip going in than we did about Heifer, and everyone was really excited beforehand. This trip was sometimes difficult because we were in such a different place than we were used to - travelling in a large group is often challenging, but as we were in a different country with an unfamiliar culture and language, this was a very unique experience. I felt sometimes challenged by how long the days were and the work we were doing, but I felt that this was a great experience that I'll always remember.
In Costa Rica, we visited Earth University, Finca Families, San Jose, and Bri Bri Tribe. We travelled on buses with guides who gave us a lot of information, and we got to see a lot of beautiful scenery. At Earth University, we learned about sustainability, and I was really impressed by the things that they do there. At Earth, they are almost completely sustainable - they use their own waste to create energy, and grow their own food for students to eat in the cafeteria. I think sustainability is really important, so I thought Earth was really cool. All the places we visited in Costa Rica were so beautiful, and I was so happy to get to see those places. Our time in the Bri Bri Tribe's treehouse was especially memorable. It was amazing to get to meet those people and spend a night outside in the rainforest.
The only thing I didn't really like about this trip was that I felt like the people we interacted with did more for us than we did for them. I felt that we learned a lot, but didn't really get to give back to the people who provided this experience for us. Despite that, this trip was definitely a highlight in my overall AGS experience so far.
